Step 1:

To make the switch, first, figure out your "Why". This helps you gain more experience and clear your thoughts on where you stand. Talking to someone who's made a similar switch, like a friend or a relative, can be helpful. If you're confident in your reasons for the switch, things will be easier and better for you. This also helps build the foundation for your transition into non-IT to IT.

Step 2:

Transitioning to IT is easier if you graduated 3-4 years ago, but success depends on your effort and commitment regardless of your graduation timeline. Following are some of the things you can take into consideration while preparing for the switch.

  1. Set aside a substantial 9-12 months to allow for a comprehensive and well-paced transition, ensuring you have the necessary time to absorb and research on it effectively.
  2. Choose a programming language and practice mastering it. Building a strong foundation in one language boosts your confidence and adaptability as you navigate IT roles.
  3. Integrate Data Structure and Algorithm (DSA) problems into your routine consistently. This practice not only hones your analytical skills but also equips you for the challenges within the IT domain.
  4. Learn a tech-stack, like Java or Javascript. Focus not just on theoretical understanding but on practical applications. Real-world proficiency in a tech-stack is key to a successful transition.
  5. Also, build a comprehensive portfolio that not only showcases your technical skills but also narrates the story of your journey. Highlight projects, achievements, and the practical application of your skills to make a compelling case for potential employers.

Step 3:

Embarking on the final and pivotal step involves a rigorous job search process. Consider the following factors.

  1. Initiate by applying for entry-level IT roles, which often offer a salary range surpassing your previous position. This strategic move further helps with both skill development and financial progression.
  2. Acknowledge that the job search process is time-intensive, spanning an estimated 3-6 months. Patience and persistence are key during this phase.
  3. Increase your chances by applying for a higher number of vacancies. If, for instance, you apply to 100 positions, the response rate may be 1 in 10. Scaling up to 500 applications increases the likelihood of hearing back from more potential employers.
  4. Stay resilient and prepared for the journey. Persistence in applying, refining your approach, and being adaptable will maximize your opportunities and lead to eventual success in securing an IT role.

Keeping the above in mind, following are some of the key takeaways in order to make a switch from a non-IT to IT role.

  1. Strengthen your Motivation:

Cultivate a strong sense of purpose and motivation for making the switch. Your determination will be the driving force behind overcoming challenges

2. Commit to a 9-12 Month Preparation Period:

Allocate a dedicated 9-12 months for preparation, emphasizing the importance of a well-paced and thorough readiness phase.

3. Apply to Numerous Positions:

Broaden your chances by applying to a substantial number of positions. Casting a wider net increases the probability of receiving responses and finding the right fit.

4. Devote Time Solely for Job Hunting:

Understand that the job hunting process requires time. Devote a significant 3 to 6 months exclusively to this phase, staying patient and persistent throughout.

5. Go the Extra Mile and Never Give Up:

Adopt a mindset of resilience. Going the extra mile, continuously refining your approach, and staying unwavering in your pursuit will ultimately lead to success in securing an IT role. Remember, persistence is key.
